Coordinating Conjunctions

Met behulp van coordinating conjunctions (zoiets als coördinerende voegwoorden) is het mogelijk om woorden van dezelfde grammaticale rang aan elkaar te plakken. Voegwoorden worden ook wel linking words genoemd.

John wants to go to bed for he is tired
Mary wants some pizza and a milkshake
Peter wants vegetables nor milk
Jack should go to bed but he isn't tired yet
I wouldn't mind a pizza or some fries
Sophie is very tired, yet she wants to go out all night
Sophie is very tired so she'll go to bed

Correlative Conjunctions

Correlative conjunctions (zoiets als correlatieve voegwoorden) zijn combinaties van woorden die samenwerken. Dit zijn both/and, either/or, neither/nor, not only/but also en whether/or.

Both John and Peter are in love with the same girl (zowel de één als de ander - gevolgd door een meervouds-werkwoord)
Either John or Peter may be succesful (de één òf de ander - gevolgd door een enkelvouds-werkwoord)
Neither John nor Peter is going to marry her (de één noch de ander - gevolgd door een enkelvouds-werkwoord)
Not only John, but also Peter is going to be very sad because of that (niet alleen de één, maar ook de ander - gevolgd door een enkelsvouds-werkwoord)
Whether John will be sad, or Peter, is no problem for the girls (of de één of de ander - gevolgd door een enkelvouds-werkwoord

Subordinating Conjunctions

Subordinating conjunctions (zoiets als ondergeschikte voegwoorden) maken het mogelijk bepalingen te verenigen. Dit zijn onder andere after, although, as, as if, as long as, as much as, as soon as, as though, because, before, by the time, even if, even though, if, in order that, in case, in the event that, lest, now that, once, only, only if, provided that, since, so, supposing, that, than, though, till, unless, until, when, whenever, where, whereas,wherever en while.

Voor tekstbegrip is het handig om voegwoorden in categoriën te zien, geordend naar functie.

Opsomming: another, besides, furthermore, in addition, morever, and, as well as, also, additionally, on top of that, more importantly (om voort te bouwen of toe te voegen aan een eerder iets).
Nadruk: indeed, in particular, particularly, significantly, especially, above all, notably (om nadruk op een iets te leggen).
Vergelijking: like, likewise, as if, as...so, as with, equally, similarly, in the same manner, in the same way (om iets met iets anders te vergelijken).
Volgorde: to begin with, next, meanwhile, subsequently, hence, secondly, firstly, finally, later, earlier, before, after, once upon a time, today, until (om dingen logisch te ordenen).
Opsomming: in short, in the end, in conclusion, on the whole, to sum up, as you can see, overall, in general, in summation (om iets aan het eind samen te vatten)
Tegenstelling: but, although, though, whereas, despite, and yet, yet, however, still, nevertheless, rather. another view, then again, alternatively, conversely, instead of, by contrast, on the other hand, otherwise (om iets te zeggen in tegenstelling tot iets eerders).
Voorbeeld: for instance, such as, to be specific, as revealed by, in the case of, illustrated by, for example, as shown by (om een voorbeeld bij iets te geven).
Voorwaarde: if, unless, providing, provided (om een voorwaarde bij iets aan te geven).
Gevolg/conclusie: as a result, hence, consequently, in short, so, that's why, therefore, thus (om een conclusie uit iets te trekken).
Reden/oorzaak: after all, as, as a result of, because, for, since (om een reden voor iets te geven).
Reden/oorzaak en gevolg/conclusie zijn vrijwel tegenovergestelden van elkaar (Peter wins competitions because he is talented - Peter is talented so he wins competitions).
